🏺 The Village of Dieulefit 🪻
Located just 15 km from the campsite, Dieulefit is a charming village in the Provençal Drôme with just over 3,200 inhabitants, crossed by the Jabron River.
Dieulefit is especially renowned for its pottery. For centuries, generations of potters have worked the local clay, preserving a unique and highly respected craftsmanship.
Today, workshops and galleries showcase unique creations, including ceramics, decorative objects and everyday pieces. It's the perfect opportunity to take home a locally made souvenir while meeting passionate artisans.
Beyond its artisanal heritage, Dieulefit became a remarkable place of refuge during the Second World War. Thanks in particular to a town hall employee who provided forged identity papers, and to the solidarity of many local residents, the village welcomed refugees and members of the Resistance, including Jewish children and their families, as well as artists and writers.
Although the village had around 2,500 inhabitants at the time, its population almost doubled as people arrived seeking protection. Several residents of Dieulefit were later honoured with the title of 'Righteous Among the Nations' in recognition of their courage and commitment in saving lives during this dark period of history. This legacy remains deeply rooted in Dieulefit's identity.
Held every Friday, Dieulefit's market is one of the highlights of village life. The streets come alive with local producers, artisans and traders sharing their products and expertise.
You'll discover a wide range of local specialities, including regional cheeses such as Picodon PDO, seasonal fruit and vegetables, Provençal delicacies, honey, olives, aromatic herbs and handmade crafts. It's the perfect opportunity to stroll through the market, chat with local producers and discover the flavours of the Provençal Drôme.
During your stay, set aside a day to explore Dieulefit: wander through its picturesque streets, visit its pottery workshops, enjoy its local shops and discover a village where nature, craftsmanship and history come together.
